“The song is the moodiest one on my record, and my nickname is Muffy so Tim Chaisson’s guitar player rightly coined it “muffy metal”,” says Shaw with a giggle,  “when the director and I sat down to talk concepts we knew we wanted the visual tone to match the sonic tone and that lead us to a Mad Men meets Hitchcock romantic thriller. We wanted to evoke a sense of danger while keeping things sexy and playing with the ideas of destiny & control.”

With a story that is somewhat elusive and ethereal, it was fitting that the video was shot on Leap Day, Feb 29th – note the choice of the 29th floor elevator button in video as a homage to the once-every-four-year event.  The video was shot in a 50th Floor condo high above the Toronto skyline… a feature that was prominent in the concept. 

“As an artist I’m all about collaboration and with the band performance shot I thought it would be cool to ask my guitar player Kori’s band Speedo Tuxedo to be in it,” explains Shaw.  “I’ve certainly benefitted from the exposure Gordie Johnson has offered me with Big Sugar; Speedo Tuxedo have just moved to Toronto from out west so I thought I’d pay it forward.”

Connell has been producing and directing since 2001 through his production company Toolkit Productions, however, “Stars” was his first music video. Now in pre-production, he is currently directing a short film called Kissing Drew supported by the Ontario Arts Council.  

“You may recognize my “love interest” in the video Harmon Walsh,” points out Shaw, “we stole him from Gossip Girl, and yes, he is that good looking in person too.  It just isn’t fair.”

Shaw has a friend and fan in Johnson, the ace guitarist, songwriter, singer and producer of the legendary Big Sugar and Grady. He not only produced her debut pop album,Place Called Happy, but brought her out on the road for some 50 dates last year. She even has three co-writes on Big Sugar’s newest album, Revolution Per Minute, including the latest single, “Little Bit A All Right.”

The new single from Meredith’s album is actually a remix of “Acted Badly,” a song she played live at Big Sugar’s shows night after night, that Gordie reworked in the studio and features Big Sugar’s DJ Friendlyness. “We wanted to capture what the song sounded like live with Sugar,” says Meredith. “It’s coy, with almost Marilyn Monroe-like vocals, tongue in cheek lyrics, and now with the remix has a total reggae tilt.”

Shaw is thrilled to be returning to Tra La La Tuesdays at C’est What with her Hearts Club Band featuring Safwan Javed from Wide Mouth Mason on drums and the outstanding talent she has lined up to open the shows.

For Immediate Release: August 16, 2011; Toronto, Ontario Singer songwriter Meredith Shaw likes Tuesdays or so it seems as for the last few months she has either posted a new video titled Tuesday Treats or performed as part of her Tra La La Tuesdays August residency at C’est What in Toronto.

This week is extra special with the release of the colourful “Little Fishy” video that was shot in Coney Island, New York by Director Michael Lenic.

“I was so excited to shoot my first music video with Michael,” says Shaw, “the experience and the product reflect our deep friendship and mutual artistic respect. We chose “Little Fishy” because it’s a song full of rich visuals and playful storylines. It’s all about love – finding it, keeping it and loosing it, we decided to have no men in the video, but instead literally fishies.”

Coney Island was the ideal backdrop, “all the colors, walls, graffiti, murals, and structures made it the postcard perfect place for Meredith to be dancing, singing and looking for her fishy,” explains Lenic. “The shoot day was long and hot, by the end of the day a storm was coming which worked beautifully for the moment she put on her rain slicker.”

The song is off Shaw’s latest album Place Called Happy produced by Gordie Johnson and recorded in Willie Nelson’s Pedernales studio in Spicewood, Texas, near Austin. Shaw recently returned from touring with Big Sugar giving the band some female energy and vocals. The tour continues this fall across Canada.

For Immediate Release: July 12, 2011; Canadian songstress Meredith Shaw is thrilled to be on tour with the newly reunited Big Sugar. Shaw’s new album Place Called Happy was produced by Gordie Johnson while she has three co-writes on the new Big Sugar album Revolution Per Minute. “Gordie has created a musical family over the years and I feel very lucky to be a part of it,” says Shaw.

After joining Big Sugar on stage during Canadian Music Week, Johnson invited her to be a part of the band’s summer and fall tours. “Being on the road with Big Sugar is super fun. I get to bring out my inner rock/reggae chick and sing on some of those classic Canadian tunes like “All Hell for a Basement” and “Diggin a Hole,” exclaims Shaw. “They’ve even added one of my tunes “Acted Badly” to the Sugar set! It’s also pretty damn cool to see the crowd rocking out to the new songs I had a hand in writing.”

The Place Called Happy CD was recorded at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales studio in Spicewood, Texas, near Austin where Johnson now lives. The 10-song album flips from emotion to emotion within stylistic variations of pop music that take a cheeky Lily Allen approach to the power vocals of Adele. Shaw will be going back into the studio next month to remix “Acted Badly” with Johnson and Big Sugar’s DJ Friendlyness and a single and video for the song will be released in the fall.
In August, Shaw will host Tra La La Tuesdays at C’est What in Toronto with her Hearts Club Band. “I have so much fun with these guys and gals onstage and I can’t wait to share it,” she says. “I have great opening acts along with a ton of special guests. I love being part of a musical community and I’m calling in a lot of favours for the shows. I want the best for my audience and they’re going to get it every week for a whole month.”
